Late summer 1691: With Protestant-Catholic war clouds gathering across Europe in far off Bohemia, a fearsome child of the Ice People is born at Gråsteinsholm country estate. From the outset he seems destinied to fullfil the family curse that one child from every generation will serve Satan and perform his evil deeds.

But in Yearning, the fourth book of The Legend of the Ice People series, the terrifying new-born boy Kolgrim, is nurtured with loving, saintly patience by Yrja, a humble peasant girl from a poor family on the estate who secretly yearns to marry Kolgrim's titled father Tarald. As this struggle with dark forces reaches its climax, the Thirty Years War is spreading and recruiting squads appear, to drag young men of the Ice People off to fight in the conflict in Germany.
